A majority fear AI and oppose data center construction
Percent saying increased use of AI makes them feel…

Source: Pew Research Center, survey conducted June 22-28, 2026.
Investors have embraced the rise of artificial intelligence, making it the most profitable investment theme in the equity markets so far this decade. The country at large begs to differ. As the chart shows, most Americans are more concerned than excited about AI, with only about 10% expressing optimism. It is also notable that these survey results have remained remarkably consistent for four consecutive years. Growing AI adoption at work and in daily life has neither raised nor lowered comfort levels.
The buildout of data centers is critical to meeting the energy needs of the burgeoning AI industry. Yet public opposition to new construction is strong and growing. A Gallup survey earlier this year found that 71% opposed building a data center in their area. Elected officials have taken notice, and some states have enacted bans or “pauses.”
The broader concern about AI expressed in the chart partly stems from human nature: fear of the unknown. Similar skepticism accompanied earlier transformative technologies, including railroads, elevators, cars, and the internet. Opposition to data centers, however, is a more pressing concern for AI. Looking ahead, the response may resemble the anti-fracking movement of the 2010s: industry concessions to address environmental and cost-of-living concerns, stronger efforts to highlight economic benefits, some increased regulation, and geographically selective bans that still allow for expansion on a national basis.

Friday: August employment data is released. Investors will be focused on whether the weaker hiring pace evident over the last two months continues.
